Always select the wire diameter to match the thickness of the base material.
A wire diameter that is too large - for example 1.6 mm for a 2-3 mm thick sheet - leads to an excessive welding current and thus to increased heat input.
This can lead to distortion, overheating or deformation of the workpiece and impair the seam quality.
